TikTok stopped being the experimental line on the media plan a while ago. TikTok advertising now reaches more than 2.2 billion people (DataReportal, 2026), US ad revenue on the platform is forecast to pass 17 billion dollars in 2026 (eMarketer), and brands are still buying attention there at prices Meta has not offered in years. This is the guide we wish clients read before briefing a TikTok advertising agency: the ad formats, what TikTok ads actually cost in 2026, how TikTok Ads Manager works, why Spark Ads should be your first buy, and how to measure any of it honestly.
One thing this guide is not: a virality masterclass. We wrote separately about how to go viral on TikTok, and everything in that piece still applies to the organic side. This one is about spending money on the platform and getting it back.

Why TikTok advertising earns its budget in 2026
TikTok earns its place on a media plan because it pairs enormous reach with attention that is genuinely difficult to buy anywhere else. The platform passed 3.5 billion monthly active users in 2026 (Sofina / ByteDance), and its ad tools report a paid-reachable audience of 2.21 billion adults, third among all social platforms behind YouTube and Facebook (DataReportal, April 2026). In the UK, 18 to 34 year olds spend 49 minutes a day on it (Ofcom, 2025). That is not a niche youth channel. That is a broadcast audience, watching with the sound on.
The old objection, that TikTok’s future in the US was too shaky to build on, has also largely been retired. In January 2026 ByteDance closed the deal moving TikTok’s US operations into a majority American-owned joint venture led by Oracle, Silver Lake and MGX, keeping the app running for its roughly 170 million US users (CNBC, 2026). Advertisers who sat out the uncertainty are now coming back to a platform that is bigger than when they left. We pulled the wider platform numbers together in our video marketing statistics round-up if you want the full picture.
And our honest take, having spent on every major platform for clients: TikTok rewards good creative more directly than any other ad system. That cuts both ways. Great work travels absurdly far. Lazy work dies quietly, at your expense.
The TikTok ad formats, explained
TikTok’s ad products split into two groups: auction formats you can buy self-serve through TikTok Ads Manager from 50 dollars a day, and reserve formats you book through TikTok directly for big brand moments. Most brands should live in the auction.
| Format | What it is | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| In-Feed Ads | Full-screen vertical video in the For You feed with a call to action button. The standard auction unit. | Traffic, conversions, app installs |
| Spark Ads | A real organic post (yours or a creator’s) boosted as an ad, keeping its likes, comments and shares. | Almost everything. Start here. |
| Search Ads | Keyword-targeted ads inside TikTok search results, launched in 2024 (TikTok Newsroom). | Capturing high-intent searches |
| Video Shopping Ads | Shoppable video tied to your product catalogue and TikTok Shop checkout. | Ecommerce and social commerce |
| Smart+ | TikTok’s automated performance product, launched October 2024, which handles targeting, bidding and creative selection for you (TikTok Newsroom, 2024). | Scaling once you have proven creative |
| TopView | The first thing a user sees on opening the app. Reserve buy, premium price. | Launches and mass-reach moments |
| Branded Mission | Crowdsource creator videos against a brief, then put media spend behind the best performers. Reserve buy. | Creator-led campaigns at scale |
| Branded Effects | Custom filters, stickers and effects people use in their own videos. | Participation and playful awareness |
A practical note on the reserve formats: TopView and Branded Mission are negotiated with TikTok and priced for household-name budgets. They can be spectacular, but nobody needs them to prove TikTok works. The auction formats will do that for a fraction of the money.
Spark Ads: boost what already works
Spark Ads are the single most useful thing in TikTok’s ad system, and if you take one tactic from this guide, take this one. A Spark Ad is not a separate ad unit. It is a genuine organic post, from your account or a creator’s (with their authorisation code), amplified with media spend. It keeps every like, comment, share and follow it earns, and it looks like TikTok because it is TikTok.
TikTok’s own split tests make the case bluntly. Spark Ads delivered a 134% higher completion rate and a 157% higher six-second view-through rate than standard In-Feed Ads, and the format’s profile landing page drove a 69% higher conversion rate at a 37% lower cost per acquisition (TikTok for Business internal A/B tests, 2022).
Those are TikTok’s numbers about TikTok’s product, so treat them as directional rather than gospel. But they match what we see in client accounts: content with organic proof behind it almost always buys cheaper attention than a made-for-ads asset cold-starting in the auction. The workflow that follows is simple. Post, watch, then put budget behind the winners rather than guessing in advance. It also means your organic channel and your creator partnerships stop being a separate world from your paid plan and start being its supply line, which is exactly how our influencer marketing team structures creator campaigns.
How to advertise on TikTok: Ads Manager step by step
Setting up TikTok Ads Manager takes an afternoon, and the structure will feel familiar if you have run Meta ads: campaign, then ad group, then ad. Here is the sequence that saves rework later.
- Create a Business Center and Ads Manager account. Business Center sits above Ads Manager and makes permissions, billing and agency access manageable from day one.
- Install the TikTok Pixel and Events API before you spend anything. Server-side events plus the pixel give the algorithm the conversion signal it optimises against. No signal, no performance.
- Pick one campaign objective. Reach, traffic, leads, app promotion or sales. Choose the thing you actually want. Optimising for clicks and hoping for purchases is the classic beginner tax.
- Build the ad group. Audience, placements, budget and schedule live here. Start broader than feels comfortable; TikTok’s delivery system finds buyers better than layered interest stacks do in 2026.
- Add creative, ideally as Spark Ads. Authorise posts from your account or collect creator authorisation codes, write the click-through, set the CTA button.
- Let it exit learning before you judge it. TikTok’s guidance is that an ad group needs roughly 50 optimisation events in its first week to stabilise (TikTok Business Help Center). Panic-editing on day two just restarts the clock.
That last point is where most self-serve accounts go wrong. The auction needs data before it can be efficient, and the data costs money. Budget for the lesson.
What TikTok ads cost in 2026
The honest answer on TikTok ad cost: entry is cheap, results-grade budgets are not, and the auction prices in between depend on your market, your season and above all your creative. The hard floors are set by TikTok itself, and the averages below come from Lebesgue’s 2026 benchmark data across conversion-optimised ecommerce campaigns.
| Cost line | 2026 figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign minimum budget | 50 dollars a day | TikTok Ads Manager Help Center |
| Ad group minimum budget | 20 dollars a day | TikTok Ads Manager Help Center |
| Average CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions) | 4.80 dollars | Lebesgue, 2026 |
| Average click-through rate | 0.61% | Lebesgue, 2026 |
| Average conversion rate | 1.92% | Lebesgue, 2026 |
| Typical cost per click | 0.20 to 2.00 dollars | Lebesgue, 2026 |
Two useful comparisons. That average CPM runs roughly 30% lower than comparable targeting on Facebook (Lebesgue, 2026), which is why performance teams keep testing their way in. And the click-through rates are lower too, which is why the cheap impressions only convert into cheap customers when the creative earns the tap. For a proper conversion test we would not go in under about 2,000 to 3,000 pounds a month of media; below that the ad groups crawl through learning and you spend the same money to find out less.
Expect prices to swing with the calendar as well. Auction CPMs climb sharply through Q4 gifting season and ease off in January, the same seasonal rhythm as every other auction platform. If your first test can run in a quieter quarter, your benchmarks will flatter you slightly, and you should know that before you celebrate.
Do you need a TikTok advertising agency?
Not always, and we say that as one. If you have a single product, a simple funnel and someone in-house who genuinely lives on the platform, run it yourself: the self-serve tools are good, and the learning compounds. An agency starts earning its fee when the creative volume does, because TikTok advertising is less a media-buying problem than a content-production problem. Winning accounts refresh creative constantly, test hooks in batches, manage creator sourcing and Spark authorisations, and read the results without fooling themselves. That is a production line, and it is precisely the machine a good performance marketing partner runs for you.
On budgets, so you can calibrate: campaigns we produce typically sit anywhere from 5,000 pounds up to 200,000 pounds, with a sweet spot around 10,000 to 40,000 pounds covering strategy, production and paid media working together. If an agency quotes you media management with no plan for where the creative keeps coming from, ask harder questions.
Want TikTok ads that actually perform?
We are a London video and content agency, winners at The Drum Awards, with 50 million views on our own TikTok this year. Creative, creators and paid media, one team.
Get In TouchCreative: the biggest lever you control
Everything in the auction is downstream of the creative. Native-feeling video, shot for the platform rather than cut down from a TV master, is the whole game: the first two seconds decide whether you bought a view or a scroll-past, captions carry the story for muted viewers, and the product needs to show up early rather than after a cinematic warm-up. User-generated and creator-made content consistently pulls its weight here, which is why we treat UGC as ad supply, not just community decoration.
Plan for versions, not a version. When we built a paid campaign for the finance app TaxZap, we produced multiple cuts of the same concept so different demographics were served the variant that mirrored them, a cleaner seeing a cleaner, a delivery rider seeing a rider. And test your openings with real spend rather than opinion, because the feed keeps humbling everyone’s instincts, ours included.
We did A/B testing on the different hooks at the start to work out what’s really resonating with audiences, and sometimes it’s honestly not at all the situation you expect it to be, and the results can really vary, which is always just so fascinating to me.
Gulliver MooreCo-Founder, Sunday Treat
That quote comes from a NatWest campaign we made with the creator Harriet Fisher, where the hook we fancied least outperformed the favourite. Budget a portion of every campaign for finding that out on purpose. Creative fatigue is the other tax nobody budgets for: a winning TikTok ad burns out in weeks, not quarters, so the refresh pipeline matters more than any single asset.
Measuring TikTok ads properly
Measure TikTok on the signal you gave it and the increment it drives, not on last-click dashboards. The plumbing first: the pixel plus Events API feeds conversions back into Ads Manager, and TikTok’s reporting defaults to a 7-day click, 1-day view attribution window, adjustable in Attribution Manager (TikTok Business Help Center). Set the window deliberately and note it next to every number you report, because moving it rewrites history.
Then the scepticism, from a place of kindness. Every ad platform grades its own homework, and TikTok’s discovery-led journeys often end in a Google search or a direct visit that last-click attribution hands to someone else. The fixes are unglamorous and worth it: UTM everything, run a post-purchase “how did you hear about us” survey, watch branded search and direct traffic move against spend, and for bigger budgets run geo holdouts or incrementality tests. Awareness buys should lean on brand lift studies rather than clicks, because nobody taps a TopView and fills in a lead form on the spot.
Judge the account monthly on blended cost per acquisition and the trend line, not daily on in-platform ROAS. TikTok usually looks worse than it is in last-click and better than it is in its own console. The truth sits in the middle, and the tools above are how you find it.
Organic and paid: one system, not two teams
The accounts that make TikTok advertising look easy run organic, creators and paid as one loop. Organic posting and creator partnerships generate a steady pool of content with real engagement data attached; Spark Ads scale the proven winners; the paid results tell the content team what to make more of. We run our own channel exactly this way, with TikToks planned two weeks ahead at all times, and it passed 50 million views in the first three months of 2026 without a media budget behind it. When we brought that same creator-led system to Lipton’s SLURP Squad campaign, it reached 149 million impressions.
The point is not to brag (well, not only). It is that paid TikTok works best as an amplifier of things already proven, and the proving happens on the organic side. If your ads team has never read your comments section, the loop is broken.
Our verdict on TikTok advertising in 2026
TikTok advertising is the best value attention in paid social right now for brands willing to make platform-native creative at a steady cadence, and a reliable money pit for brands that upload their TV ad and wait. The auction is cheap to enter, the measurement is solvable, and Spark Ads mean you never have to bet big on unproven content. Start with 50 dollars a day and a pixel, earn your way to bigger numbers, and put the serious budget behind creative with receipts. Find the fun, then fund the fun.
